2011 Artist Blog - Entry #10

Dark Knight`s revenge, March 2005
The Hunter, March 2007

Alessandro Baldasseroni is an Italian digital 3D artist specialized in... well, everything! He is a true "monster" in a very positive way because he has contributed his talent and craftsmanship to a ton of video games' cinematics that millions of people throughout the world love and admire. In the world of 3D art, Baldasseroni is considered as one of the Great Masters of CG artistry due to him creating marvelous 3D art pieces over a decade ago before it finally went viral. As years went by, he grew and improved tremendously as an artist and to this day Alessandro makes breathtaking, mind-blowing characters, robots, fantasy creatures, and vehicles. A very hard act to follow, his profound knowledge of character creation is truly unparallel to his design and execution skills. From naturalistic to stylized pieces, each work that he creates has a purpose and a grand idea behind it. There is absolutely nothing out of place or out of balance, everything fits together perfectly to create the final piece and flaws of art creation are non-existent in the works of Baldasseroni. He has all the necessary skills listed in all of the previous entries and probably much more that I don't have a single idea of.  It is quite hard to describe his masterpieces so I would prefer you just look at them instead. 2011 Artist Blog - Entry #9

Old man posing, March 2011
Unbound, September 2010

Fabio Pacheco Paiva a visual effects artist living in Sao Paulo, Brazil, who specializes in high-quality 3D modeling, character design, digital sculpting, texturing and assets for feature film, games and other projects. I have selected this artist mainly because he has mastered human anatomy and knows how to present a body in a sensual manner. He understands its beauty and that unquestionably shows up in his works. His profound knowledge of portraiture and figurative art is something I am striving for to achieve myself. Based on the pieces I've posted here, Paiva has an outstanding comprehension of effects of aging, planes, realistic folds on clothing, weight, bodies in motion, balance as well as essential skills needed to make such spectacular presentations - lighting, color theory, shadowing, and composition. His works are simple yet accomplished with a lot of care and a great amount of detail such as wrinkles, pores, and realistic hair for much believability. With this being said, the amount of detailing is not overwhelming to look at - but just the right amount needed to achieve realism. Nothing distracts from the main piece and idea the artist is trying to convey to a viewer. The elegant poses and soft forms of the two female characters really strike the audience by giving them a sense of emotion and beauty of the female figure as well as telling a story about the characters. Paiva knows exactly what the viewer strives to see and he does an outstanding job at doing just that - presenting his characters with emotions and a central idea. (word count - 261)

2011 Artist Blog - Entry #8

Tribute to Marty Feldman, October 2007
Psycho Girl and the Mutant Kangaroo, March 2006

Krishnamurti Costa is a professional Digital Artist, an amateur Photographer, and an aspiring traditional sculptor (so he claims). I swear I had a really hard time picking which works of his to display on here - they are all that mind-blowing! So I decided to include quite a few - a real showcase, but I could've easily picked 10 more. Costa specializes in character creation and all of his characters are of an outstanding quality. The presentation, the mood, the colors - everything is of masterful level. The banner on his portfolio says "Characters with Soul" and I can't argue with that. That motto alone describes his work better than all of the rambling I'm putting on here! It looks like he's been doing art for almost 10 years now and that clearly shows in the masterpieces he produced and keeps on producing. Costa has an understanding of everything there is to understand in order to create such works. In order to critique the stuff he's made, one needs to have the same level of skill and knowledge that many aspiring artists (myself included) do not have. The diversity in the works I've posted on here is tremendous. Although it is mostly organic characters, the characters themselves range in style and presentation. He undoubtedly knows human and animal anatomy, body in motion, effects of aging, fur and hair, a sense of weight, expressions, silhouettes, composition, presentation skills (lighting, color theory), post-production, and the list goes on. Since most of his works are textured (painted on), knowledge of skin tones is required. Such level of mastery can only be achieved through perseverance, years of practice, and perfection - and that is why we admire outstanding artists such as Krishnamurti Costa. (word count - 289)

2011 Artist Blog - Entry #7

Don Corleone, July 2010
The Great Flight, November 2007

Fabio Bautista is a Character Modeler/Texture Artist from Bogota, Colombia. He is an artist with wide experience in Character Creation for games, animated short films, 3D printing and advertisements. His works range from cartoony characters, caricatures, creatures such as orcs and ogres, to realistic humans (although humans are few and far in between). Going through Bautista's portfolio, I've noticed his focus is mainly on caricatures, and we'll be looking at two of those today. Obviously, to capture likeness in a caricature, one needs to know what facial features are unique to the real person being portrayed which is not an easy task by any means. Facial anatomy has to be understood as well as the canon of proportions. For example, the Jim Carrey caricature has an expression - he is smiling so it is not just the exaggeration of facial features that needs to be executed, but the expression and wrinkles that also need to be studied that are unique to Jim Carrey himself. The "Don Carleone" caricature is also very well executed and it does read like the original Don, played by Marlon Brando in the Godfather saga, and is easily identifiable. Compared to the organic Jim Carrey sculpture, this one is much more planar - we can see that in the character's hands, fingers, and facial features of the head. The stumpiness of this character gives him that much more character and believability. The composition is well executed and those old-looking, grainy, sepia tone colors tell quite a story. 2011 Artist Blog - Entry #6

Final Education (May 2006)

Ralf Stumpf is a Deustch 3D/2D artist (mainly does 3D sculpting) from Mülheim-Ruhr, Germany, who specializes in organic stuff such as stylized creatures, monsters, and cartoon characters but who can also do hard-surface, mechanical modeling. Stumpf is one of a kind with his own style and crazy ideas executed to their fullest extent, if not beyond that. His style differs from other artists we've looked at so far by the vivid, bright colors of his characters, and overall presentation of his work. I've included 6 art pieces of Stumpf just to show how varied and divers his works really are. He has an in-depth knowledge of composition, lighting, color, silhouette, planes, anatomy, and forms. His creations are unique, diverse, and can be read from the distance easily due to proper silhouettes and a sense of weight in the characters that he makes. Stumpf's design sculpts are filled with an immense amount of personality and emotion which makes them really stand out. They are also very memorable. I would have no trouble comparing his creations to the works of well-known studios such as those of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation - they are that good! This is an example of an artist who pours heart into his work. Stumpf takes such a great care when creating these awesome characters that nothing redundant is present. It is simple and effective, and that is how you please an eye of a viewer and an audience! Ralf Stumpf is a true master in his own right. (word count - 250)
